Classification Of Storage Tanks

Jan 16, 2026

Due to the different storage media, storage tanks come in various forms.

By location: They can be classified as aboveground storage tanks, underground storage tanks, semi-underground storage tanks, offshore storage tanks, subsea storage tanks, etc.

By oil type: They can be classified as crude oil storage tanks, fuel oil storage tanks, lubricating oil tanks, edible oil tanks, fire-fighting water tanks, etc.

By purpose: They can be classified as production oil tanks, storage oil tanks, etc.

By form: They can be classified as vertical storage tanks, horizontal storage tanks, etc.

By structure: They can be classified as fixed-roof storage tanks, floating-roof storage tanks, spherical storage tanks, etc.

By size: Tanks larger than 50m³ are large storage tanks, mostly vertical; tanks smaller than 50m³ are small storage tanks, mostly horizontal.

By material: The materials required for storage tank projects are divided into tank body materials and auxiliary facility materials. Tank materials can be classified into low-strength steel and high-strength steel according to tensile yield strength or tensile standard strength. High-strength steel is mostly used for storage tanks with a capacity of 5000m3 or more. Auxiliary facilities (including wind-resistant ring beams, locks, ladders, guardrails, etc.) are all made of ordinary carbon structural steel with lower strength. Other accessories and attachments are made of other materials according to different uses. Commonly used domestic steels for manufacturing tanks include 20, 20R, 16Mn, 16MnR, and Q235 series.
